EVE University displays a disturbing disregard for the environment

At 04:45 Server Time on the Wednesday 6, July 2011, agents for the New Eden Conservation Society discovered a large cloud of detritus in the Abudban solar system. The junk left behind appears to be the result of an EVE University operation. The area around the Abudban to Osoggur stargate was littered with jettisoned canisters. There were also a large number of abandoned drones in the area.

Agents of the New Eden Conservation Society rushed to the scene to clear the damage. The environmental impact was minimized, at the expense of much time, effort, and fuel on the part of the agents involved, but the area was returned to its natural state.

In total, our agents collected more than 1,200m3 of detritus, including;

In addition to the above our agents also discovered that EVE University had marooned a tourist with some of their junk in a jettisoned canister. If the agents of the New Eden Conservation Society had not arrived when they did, the tourist would certainly have died. The canister had only minutes of oxygen left and was in imminent danger of rupture from exposure to the vacuum of space. The tourist is now recovering in the Abudban VIII - Moon 6 - Six Kin Development Plant. His condition is described as “serious, but stable”. A concerned capsuleer, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, stated “this is a travesty, and should not be condoned or encouraged”.

Despite repeated attempts to contact a representative of EVE University for comment, both on the scene and through their public relations office, now more than 24 hours on from our discovery of this environmental disaster, we have yet to receive any reply.

Given the disturbing disregard for the environment displayed by members of EVE University in their handling of this disaster, we would like to express our hope that this was an isolated incident perpetrated by a few misguided individuals, and also, our confidence, that those responsible are quickly removed from positions of power and influence. However, with the continuing unresponsiveness of Eve University in regard to this disaster we find ourselves doubting whether this is the case, and should this be the prevailing attitude within Eve University, we ask, are these the people we want educating our young capsuleers?

A debate on asteroids

In Abudban local chat this afternoon an interesting discusion occoured between members of the New Eden Conservation Society and capsulers in the system. Please read the transcript here.

With a total pod pilot population of only 300,000, how is it then, we ask, that the asteroids are so under represented? With the ratio of Asteroids to pilots at 17:1, where is proportional representation?

In some, and in fact most, ‘high security’ solar systems, asteroids are being mined to extinction, and what does Concord do to stop this gross excess? Nothing.

If you fire a laser, unprovoked, at another pod pilot, Concord will respond.
If you fire a laser at a jettisoned canister, Concord will respond.
If you fire a laser at a station, Concord will respond.
If you fire a laser at a jump gate, Concord will respond.
If you fire a laser at a helpless asteroid, Concord will not respond.

And they call it high security.

Is this logical, is this fair, or is it because they are so helpless that they do not even merit our concern? Who cares, what are they going to do about it, you may ask? Well we care, we will do something about it. We will stand up against the ruthless culling those gentle giants, our friends, the ‘Roids, and obtain for them the rights that they deserve.

Message from the founder

Throughout New Eden, once abundant asteroid belts are being mined for ore and minerals, to line the pockets of the wealthy elite, and destroyed by the impacts of environmental change. Almost all of the asteroids that once covered New Eden millennia ago, before the opening of EVE Gate, have already been degraded or destroyed.

Current state of industry in New Eden

Current mining, refining, and manufacturing practises have large wastage factors, which lead to major ecological problems.

The mining lasers used in contemporary mining operations work by using a laser to ionize the ore and then a rotating magnetic field to pull the plasma into the mining laser’s collection bay. This magnetic field pulses to get the plasma to go up the mining beam. What is not well known is that this causes massive waste of ore. A large proportion of the ionized ore are lost into the vacuum of space. This doesn’t take into account the careless miners who let their cargo holds get full and thereby cause their mining lasers to initiate an emergency shutdown, as they no longer have sufficient space to store the ore, the excess is jettisoned into space, causing incalculable ecological harm.

Once a mining pilot has filled his cargo hold they often place the ore they mine in jettisoned canisters. The problem with these it that after an hour or so they break up and release their contents into the ether. This creates more pollution than almost any other activity in New Eden. It is also the worst single act in terms of its effects on the local environment. The main cause of this damage if the shear quantity of material that is typically released. These canisters can hold up to 27,500 m3 of ore. This much ore being released in a single burst is catastrophic for the local environment.

The mining of of ore from asteroids has flow on implications to the environment. The main ones are refining and manufacturing. The refining or ores produces minerals that are used in manufacturing items for sale in EVE. The act of refining the ore into its constituent minerals creates large drains on the power cores of stations, whether run by non player corporations or by player owned corporations. This in tern requires the mining of more ore to power the stations in a vicious cycle that is destroying the beautiful Paradise of New Eden. The refining also produces waste that must be disposed of. The wastage factor for refining a load of ore, may reach 37.5% in some cases. All of this waste must be disposed of. This is usually done by ejecting it out of the nearest airlock, again contributing the general pollution in space.

The manufacturing of items in New Eden is another major contributor to the pollution problem in New Eden. The manufacture of anything in New Eden has a large wastage factor, sometimes as high as 30%. This waste must go somewhere. As with almost everything else that is done in New Eden the waste is flushed out into space. This helps to contribute to the accretion disks seen around many stations. Like refining the manufacture of items in New Eden creates drains on the station power grid which requires fuel to be mined to power the station.

As I have outlined the industrial activities of New Eden has a serious ecological harm. The accretion disks around stations in New Eden are stark reminders that while the vastness of space provides space for everyone, we must all look after it because in space everything remains.
